Kosher Blues in Baltimore
Left: Doors open/Right: doors closed. Yet another chase to work around... I hid this one in a broom closet! The back part of the kitchen, once you get past the breakfast table, is more of a mudroom/laundry room than anything else. Designing the pantry and broom area as closets rather than cabinets reduces costs in an area much less visually important than the rest of the kitchen. I angled the broom closet to make room for a couple of vacuums.

The cabinets are by Canyon Creek in Breeze (blue) and White. The door style in this shot is Brentwood (Shaker) with slab drawers. The kitchen was part of a complete home renovation, and I was not the decorator for this project but the beautiful backsplash tile is "Dellano Exotic Blue 8x48 Polished Wood Look Porcelain Tile."

Bonnie and Bernie downsized to a grand old condominium a few blocks from their former house. The condo has high ceilings and beautiful moldings, and also a multitude of angles, chases, and vents. Goals included a workable kosher kitchen, an informal eating area, and room for: an extra freezer, extra fridge, a wine fridge, a washer/dryer, utility closet, and a pantry. An additional goal was to keep the multitude of chases and vents from interfering with the flow of the space. I have numbered the chases, vents, and pipe, which were a major design challenge. #4 and #6 (a pipe) turned out to not be visual or design issues, but we needed to work around all the others.

Due to constraints of the building, both the meat and dairy sinks are on the same counter run. We were able to fit 2 dishwashers, a tray cabinet, and a drawer stack along the run. The cabinet left of the farther sink is reduced depth to work around one of the chases.

The 4-drawer cabinet between the sinks allows for both milchik and fleishik knife storage. The 45° angle running through the center of the kitchen is visually appealing but decreasess usable cabinet space. This pic was taken before the fridge was put in. You can see a chase behind the pantry cabinet. Measuring had to be extremely accurate because of all the chases and angles.

The chase left of the fridge cannot be seen because the reduced depth tall pantry cabinet completely conceals it. We used the very large chase in the right corner to define 2 kitchen centers: a microwave niche and the cooking center.

Another corner view — you can see how tight the clearances are.

Even though the clearances are very tight, you can open all the doors and drawers without hitting anything!

Every home needs a junk drawer! This command center is convenient both to the back entry and the breakfast table. Drawers, open shelving for cookbooks and such, and a counter where you can put a parcel down as you enter go a long way toward keeping organized.
